For our first meeting of 2023 we were pleased to welcome Liz Garratt, a partner in a firm of solicitors based at Alfreton, who talked to us about Wills and Power of Attorney.
She emphasized the need to regularly review the contents of a Will, as our own wishes, circumstances and family members can change over the years. Also very important is the wording on the Will, to ensure that the deceased’s wishes are carried out exactly as intended. She gave examples of instances when this had not happened and families had lost everything, particularly when a charity has been nominated as a beneficiary.
Power of Attorney can be arranged to cover health and/or finances in the event of not being able to manage these aspects for ourselves. It is also very important, as it enables decisions to be made by others at a time when long delays and problems could occur if the individual is unable to do so.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday, 1st February 2023, at 7pm in St John’s Parish Room, when a member of the Community Specialist Nursing Team from Ashgate Hospicecare will be giving a talk about their work in caring for patients and their families at the hospice.
Everybody welcome.
Trish Law.
