NEWBOLD WOMEN’S GROUP FEBRUARY 2020
At our February meeting Steve Franks, our verger, gave a very interesting talk on Barcelona, mainly concentrating on La Sagrada Familia, the spectacular cathedral. After taking us on a short tour of the city, including other examples of Antoni Gaudi’s work, we arrived for a comprehensive visit to this building. Construction started in 1882 under the direction of architect Villar, who resigned the following year, when Gaudi became the chief architect. On Gaudi’s death in 1926 less than a quarter of the original plans had been completed and work has been interrupted for various reasons over the years, although now it is intended that it will be finished by 2026, the centenary of Gaudi’s death. The building was finally consecrated in 2010, with services being held in the impressive crypt. Only the funds from entrance fees are used to pay for the work on this massive project. Advances in technology have enabled building work to proceed more quickly, but there are still a number of spires and the Glory façade to be constructed. We appreciated the detailed pictures of the Nativity and Passion facades, which are on opposite sides of the building and are in totally different styles. The presentation also included a video tour of the building, giving a good impression of the whole building outside and of the interior.
Our meeting at 7pm on Wednesday, 4th March, will be our Annual General Meeting, when there will be elections for the committee and subscriptions for the year will become due. Following the meeting we will be having our usual Cheese and Wine refreshments.
