Newbold Women’s Group Meeting January 2016
We were happy to tell members that our secretary, Jean Lee, was making good progress after having a hip replacement just before Christmas.
Newbold Women’s Group started 2016 with a presentation by Stuart Watkinson. This was different to his previous presentations as it was thought-provoking as well as very interesting. Stuart told us about three prisons that he had visited. The first was Alcatraz, an island just off San Francisco and a federal prison for thirty years. We heard about famous inmates including Al Capone and Robert Stroud the Birdman of Alcatraz who, in fact, never kept birds there. The second prison was Robben Island in Table Bay, Cape Town, South Africa. We all knew of Nelson Mandela who was in prison for a total of 27 years, initially on Robben Island. Stuart had pictures to show his visits and also when these prisons were in use. With his third prison Auschwitz in Poland he spared us pictures of inmates. He feels very strongly that everyone should visit Auschwitz – ‘lest we forget’!
A member of the team of Street Pastors in Chesterfield will be talking to the group in February. Members were reminded that at our AGM in March a new member of the committee will be needed and were asked to think seriously about offering to join the committee.
