Mother’s Union September 2015

MOTHERS UNION

The AGM was held on 9th September, following Mass at 2pm in the Lady Chapel, taken by Fr. Nigel.

Eight members were joined by the Rector for our meeting in the Parish Room at 2.30pm. There were 4 apologies.

Fr. Nigel based his comments, not surprisingly on ‘Retirement’. He recalled seeing the local miners, when he was a boy, sitting on the church wall, after retirement. As they had all said that they ‘could not wait’ to retire, this was a surprise. When questioned they replied that their wives would not let them back into the house until tea time! With no transport and very little money, there was not a lot to do, in those days. However, our Rector explained, a clergy retirement is rather different. To start with, he must vacate his house for the mew incumbent. He must move out of the Deanery, away from friends and neighbours, so as not to be seen to ‘infringe’ on his successor’s ground. From being ‘on call’ six days a week he would be ‘free’. He concluded that he would miss the life very much and the parishioners, especially.

The three officers were willing to serve for another year and so the ‘Named Member’ – used to be called ‘Branch Leader’ is Mrs Anne Hartley, the Treasurer is Miss. Margaret Beasley and Secretary Mrs. Ruth Cable. All present were satisfied with this.

The usual reports were presented and the Rector drew the winning raffle ticket, won by Mrs. Wendy Braid. The meeting, after tea and biscuits, concluded at 4pm.

There will be a joint inter Deanery (Bolsover & Chesterfield) meeting on Tuesday 27th October in Bolsover Parish Church, 10am – 2.30pm. The theme will be “Threads of Hope”. A presentation will be given to illustrate an Anglican Project in the shanty towns of Lima, Peru. There will be items to purchase and a raffle and stalls. All welcome.

For further details contact either Jean on 551020 or Mary on 824017.

The next meeting will be lunch at Chesters on 14th October at 12.30pm. All members welcome.

Ruth Cable
