MOTHERS UNION NEWS
Fourteen members of the Chesterfield Deanery M.U. had a lovely day out on March 25th, Lady Day. We were taken by the Community coach to Buxton and had time for browsing the shops and (if the weather had been a little warmer) the gardens, before lunch. We then went by coach to St. Mary’s Church, where our last curate, Fr. Keith Cocking is now vicar. He took a service for Lady Day, which was very well attended. Afterwards we enjoyed tea and cakes and fellowship with the Buxton and District ladies. A pleasant day.
The Mothers Union meeting held on 8th April was attended by eight members. Apologies were received from Mrs Iris Gill and Mrs Iris Wright; Mrs Anne Hartley led the prayers and we all joined in with the Mothers Union prayer.
The speaker was Mrs Agnes Garrett our Derby Diocesan President, who spoke about the Bishop of Derby’s involvement with Parliament in the business of human trafficking. DerbyUniversity is involved in this project and the M.U. are asked to help, by providing small sums of money to buy ‘overnight emergency’ items. The scheme is in its infancy at present but the M.U. will be involved in a very important and worthwhile project, from the beginning. After answering questions Mrs Garrett left as she had another engagement.
It was decided to have afternoon tea at St. Elphins, in Darley Dale, on Wednesday 13th May. Mrs Ruth Cable will arrange possible transport and ring to make the reservation. All members present were in favour of this. All who have signed up will be given further details regarding the bus.
In June our organist, Stuart Watkinson will play a selection of summer music for us in church.
Members were reminded that the Council meeting and A.G.M. would be in Matlock on 28th April, the officers usually attend.
The Diocesan Festival will be in Wingerworth Church at 7pm on Wednesday 10th June. Our banner will be processed. It is hoped that we can either fill two cars, or share a taxi.
Finally, members had tea and biscuits and the meeting concluded at 3.30pm.
