MOTHER’S UNION
There were seven M.U. members present at the February meeting.
Ruth welcomed everyone including two visitors from Wingerworth. M.U. Prayers were said, mentioning those who were unable to attend due to illness and frailty. Apologies had been received from Mrs. Edna Haywood and Mrs. Iris Gill. Anne Hartley gave out copies of the Easter M.U. gift catalogue and offered her copy of “Families First” if anyone wished to borrow it.
Ruth read out details of the local Women’s World Day of Prayer services. These are on
Friday 6th March 1.30pm at St. Bartholomew’s Church, Old Whittington and
7pm at St. Andrew’s United Reformed Church, Newbold Road.
A Lady Day service would be held on Wednesday 25th March, 2pm in St. Mary’s Church, Buxton, Fr. Keith Cocking’s church. A bus will be booked for this and we will be going for the day. Fr. Keith is the Chaplain to Buxton Deanery M.U.
The Diocesan Festival Service will be on 10th June at 7pm in All Saints Church, Wingerworth.
Anne introduced our speaker – Mrs. Barbara Wallace, who founded the “Nenna Kind” Drop-In-Centre for cancer sufferers and their relatives and friends, following her daughter’s death from the disease, in 2009. The Centre, above Dents Chemists in New Square is staffed by volunteers and offers various therapies, advice or just a place to sit down and have a cup of tea. After the talk, members enjoyed tea and buns and social time together.
The next M.U. meeting in the Parish Room will be on Wednesday April 8th at 2pm when our speaker will be Mrs. Agnes Garrett, president of Derby Diocese M.U. giving a talk entitled ‘My time as President’.
