WALKING GROUP
Our walk for April was led by Eric and Helen and started in Ashford-in-the-Water with ten of us negotiating compacted snow and ice on some of the narrow paths thereby needing to keep our eyes cast downwards looking for suitable safe spots to put our feet. Eventually we were able to look at the surrounding landscape of green fields bordered by ribbons of white.
Our steep climb up to Monsall Head, beneath welcoming, warm sunshine, gave us the perfect excuse for eating ice creams and admiring the panoramic view of the viaduct, and the River Wye in the valley below ( together with hoards of other visitors). We made our way back on a much easier route by walking through the newly opened and well-lit, Headstone railway tunnel. The inside of this tunnel revealed the fantastic stone workmanship of the Victorians – built to support trains – built to last.
We ambled back across the open field paths, alive with running rabbits, new born lambs in the fields and bird song in the air.
The next meeting will be on Sunday 5th May, when we will be led by Bob Cable on a 5 mile walk starting in Edale. We will be heading to Grindsbrook Booth, along the Pennine way to Upper Booth, Dale Head and back to Edale. If any newcomers wish to join us you will be made most welcome. Please meet us at the church gates with your packed lunch, transport will be arranged and off we will go!
