Numbers for the August walk were down to two – Steve and myself decided to carry on with the walk especially as it was a nice sunny evening. The walk was 4½ miles starting outside the church in Bolsover. We walked towards the water tower and turned towards Hillstown. We were soon crossing a number of fields. We could see to the right an area of a field and hedges that were scorched from a recent fire. Nearly all the fields had been harvested with only a few oat fields still to do.
We walked through the village of Scarcliffe which was very quiet and turned down Gang Lane to a gated lane leading to Birch Hill Plantation. We crossed Mansfield Road that goes from Clowne to Glapwell and onto a bridlepath – Poulterwell Lane that eventually comes out on the edge of Palterton. If you read last year’s magazine you will realise we did this walk in August.
In Palterton it was the scarecrow festival and like last year; they were very good. My favorite was the pirate with his treasure (sorry no picture as it was close to a window of the bungalow.) Palterton has a micro pub called the Pickled Pear which I had not noticed before today. There were groups of people outside having a drink in the warm sunshine. The Pickled Pear started out as the post office. Round the corner we could smell a barbecue with a number of people milling around enjoying themselves.
We had good views across to Sutton Scarsdale Hall before entering a field that has bad memories of cows who did not like us in their field. Today there were a
few cows mainly lying down and although watching us they did not move. I did however move quickly through the field. We walked along a number of tracks with hedges on both sides and houses on both sides. We grazed on blackberries as we walked. There were a number of kissing gates on the walk but no tiles.
We soon were back in Bolsover. The next walk is on 6th Septembers starting at 12 noon from outside Church. Please bring a packed lunch with you if you
