Our Group met in the Parish Room on Wed. 1st October, and our meeting was led by Trish Law. Amongst various notices Janet McGurrin told us about the Lunch to be held at Chesterfield Golf Club on November 5th, 12.30-1.00, and urged us to make our choices from the menu she had agreed with the Golf Club staff.
We were also reminded of our Christmas Celebration, carol service and party, to be held in the Parish Room on Wednesday December 3rd starting 7.00 p.m. Following our usual prayer Trish introduced Andrew and Gillian Campbell who were to give us a talk about Hearing Ambassadors – a charity promoting awareness of hearing loss.
Andrew spoke first about the difficulties he experiences since losing most of his hearing through illness years ago. The isolation, embarrassment, and the fact that he stares at people in order to lip read, were a few of the problems he lives with. Personally I found his part of the talk revealing, thought provoking and deeply moving.
After this Gillian began her talk with the amazing fact that 11 million people in the UK have some form of hearing loss, that is 1 in 6 people, expected to be 1 in 4 by 2050. Gillian explained how people with hearing losses cope with conversations and social exchanges, but most importantly how our responses when talking with them can enhance their ability to interact and enjoy socializing.
It was all very thought provoking and by the end of her talk Gillian encouraged us all to consider ourselves Hearing Ambassadors!
There will not be any meeting on the evening of Wed. 5th November – the day of our Lunch at the Golf Club.
Our next meeting will be for our Christmas Celebration on Wednesday 3rd December, at 7.00p.m. in the Parish Room.
