The Group was entertained by Alva de Chiro who stepped in at the last minute when our advertised speaker became unavailable. Alva has visited us on a few occasions before and always manages to raise a laugh or two among us. This evening was no exception when she had entitled her talk ‘Good for a Laugh.’ I personally felt that if anyone was feeling down on the night then they would have been on a high by the end of the talk.
Alva read us a few poems written by well-known poets including Pam Ayres, and included a number of funny anecdotes. Many of which we could all relate to, proving I think, just how we all do and say silly things at times!
Janet, another Committee Member, had brought along a good number of ‘Traidcraft’ items for sale on the night. The profit made £65.45 and has very kindly been donated to Newbold Church Funds, so special thanks go to her.
Our next get-together will be on Wednesday 6 November when a good number of ladies will enjoy a meal out at Chesterfield Golf Club. Departing from tradition, we will eat at 1pm this year. The weather of the last few years has left a lot to be desired with having both rain and snow, I believe. Also, many members are not so happy with going out at night these days when it can be cold and dark and, downright miserable.
The Christmas Celebration meeting will be on Wednesday 4 December when we have a Carol Service and party with goodies/food made and prepared by members. We also have a ‘Secret Santa’ type draw on the night when each lady brings along a gift-wrapped present so all get a surprise item for Christmas.
With the New Year falling on a Wednesday (dare I mention next year), we shall not be meeting until 5 February 2025 when a speaker coming from ‘Aquabox’ will be telling us how the company provide clean water and humanitarian aid in times of crisis.
Everyone is welcome to come along to our meetings, and if you would like any further details do please speak to Trish, Marilyn J. or myself.
