NEWBOLD WOMEN’S GROUP
The July meeting was the summer outing and this was a day trip to Tissington Hall and Gardens.
Twenty four members and two visitors travelled by coach to Tissington on a bright summers day. We had a private tour of the house, home to the FitzHerbert family since 1609! Our guides were David and Fran Holt, who have been working at Tissington Hall for many years. We had a wonderful tour of the magnificent gardens, saw a ‘clock’, where you stand and raise your arm and the time of day is revealed by the shadow of your arm on the lawn. Very clever! The house contains many wonderful paintings and beautiful furniture (which we were allowed to sit on) and many interesting artefacts.
Lunch had been pre-booked for us all in Herberts English Tea Rooms in the village and was enjoyed by everyone. Following our meal we had ample time to wander around the village, explore the church and the various little shops on site. A special favourite was the “Sweet Shop” where many ladies could not resist the charms of the young man behind the counter, who was able to conduct a very brisk trade in the sale of sweets, fudge and ice creams!
We left Tissington at 3.30pm and arrived safely back at the church in time for tea.
A lovely day out with excellent weather!
