Walking Group December 2013

WALKING GROUP

Warm sunshine and a mild, calm day suggested a pleasant walk in store for us, as we set off for Peak Village, Rowsley.  We ate our lunches at a picnic bench then, after waiting for one of the party to apply her lipstick (under the close supervision of the rest of us), we began.

It had previously been decided to shorten this walk, otherwise we would have been groping our way through the darkness, and as it happened we arrived back at the cars in good time and some people even managed to attend the Christingle Service.

The walk was a bit hilly and in places, quite muddy, but no one complained as we walked beside the River Derwent towards the hamlet of Calton Lees.  The houses here are all painted in Chatsworth Blue.  From the top of Calton Pastures we had a good view of  the Russian House and in the distance the Hunting Tower; both are now holiday lets.   We had a pleasant walk through Manners Wood where the track was cushioned underfoot by pine needles and fallen leaves then out in the open we saw hundreds ( or even thousands) of new trees, recently planted, all sheaved in plastic to prevent the deer from eating them.

January’s 4 ½  mile walk will be led by Pat Law starting at Barlborough and walking towards Spinkhill and back.   Anyone wanting to shred the excesses of Christmas fare, is welcome to join us.  Just turn up at the church gates for 12 noon on the first Sunday

of each month with a packed lunch and transport will then be arranged.

Advance notice.

February 2nd  –  will be led by Colin Hand through Holmesfield

March 2nd     –   to be led by Eric & Helen  TBA
