WALKING GROUP
With many regulars missing, only 4 of us set off from Calver on the October walk. With the Indian summer continuing into October there was certainly no need for our coats on this walk!
After a lunch stop where we sat around the tree outside Stoney Middleton’s St. Martin’s Church with its octagonal nave, we continued up through the village. Crossing fields, we reached the steep descent into the limestone valley of Coombs Dale.
After a short walk up the dale, we turned off up another quiet dale, gradually ascending to Deep Rake. Here we had views of Foolow and Eyam in the distance as well as up to nine hang gliders in the sky.
Descending the track back towards Calver we had views of Froggatt, Curbar and Baslow Edges. Many people could be seen walking on the edges, also making the most of the warm weather, probably for the last time this year.
After walking through the outskirts of Calver we reached our car for the return journey back to church.

Next month’s 5 mile walk, down the five Pits Trail, will take place on Sunday 3rd November, starting from Timber Lane Car Park. Our leader is Pat Law who will take us through the area of Holmewood and Williamthorpe Ponds. Please meet at the church gates for 12 noon with a packed lunch. Transport will be arranged then. We are a small, friendly group and if anyone would like to join us you will be made most welcome.
